1. What type of creative do you identify as?

I’m a writer first, but I also identify as a “multihyphenate creative” because I have a passion for several different artistic mediums–from writing to graphic design to photography. I never want to limit myself to being one thing, as my personal and professional interests are truly expansive. I find inspiration and joy in telling stories in various formats.

2. How did you find yourself in your career?

Honestly, I always knew I would be a writer. From elementary school onward, English was my favorite subject. While many of my peers didn’t enjoy writing essays or reading lengthy novels, I was always drawn to these assignments. However, I didn’t know exactly how those interests would translate into a career. As a chronically online (and super ambitious) kid, I ended up finding an internship for teenagers with a youth-focused media company called Teen Diaries (now Pretty Girls Sweat) during my sophomore year of high school. That opportunity helped me gain valuable foundational skills as a journalist. I was able to write weekly articles, conduct interviews with influential people, and gain the most incredible mentor (Aeshia DeVore Branch). From there, I continued to build my portfolio by writing for Her Campus and local media outlets throughout college. My experience eventually led me to an editorial internship at Byrdie in 2019—a turning point that allowed me to grow within the company and, most recently, become its senior beauty editor.

3. Growing up, who or what were you inspired by?

Elaine Welteroth has been one of my biggest inspirations since I was in high school. In 2016, she made history as the youngest and first Black editor-in-chief at Teen Vogue. As a Black woman, seeing her in that role made me feel even more confident that my dreams in media were possible and that I, too, could make an impact on this industry through my words. I recommend everyone read her book, More Than Enough: Claiming Space for Who You Are (No Matter What They Say).

4. What’s your favorite thing to write or speak about?

Since I entered the beauty industry in 2019, my goal has been to celebrate Black beauty and amplify the work of Black founders, executives, and other professionals in the industry. As a journalist working for a large media company, I strive to use my platform to make a positive impact and spark meaningful dialogue. From reporting on inclusive foundations (or the lack thereof) to examining ingredient appropriation within the industry, analyzing the beauty industry through a cultural lens is part of my purpose.

5. Tell us more about The Hue Report.

In 2020, I launched The Hue Report—a podcast and community born out of my desire to celebrate the brilliance of the Black beauty industry. Through candid conversations with Black entrepreneurs, editors, and executives, the podcast explores their career journeys and their unique perspectives on beauty. This year, I’m excited to relaunch the brand with a fresh new feel, deeper conversations, and (fingers crossed!) in-person events. The Hue Report’s goal is to be the ultimate hub for learning, connection, and celebration of all things Black beauty. You can stay connected with the brand at thehuereport.com and on Instagram @thehuereport.

6. What advice would you give to your younger self?

Younger Olivia was incredibly introverted and less confident than I am today. I’d tell her to recognize that her voice is her superpower, so she should stop second-guessing her thoughts and ideas.

7. What are some brands you think are really here for the culture and community?

Numerous brands come to mind, including Topicals, 54 Thrones, Ami Colé, Oui the People, The Lip Bar, Pattern, Bread Beauty Supply, LYS Beauty, SheaMoisture, and Danessa Myricks Beauty. These brands consistently invest in their community online and offline, and they create top-tier, inclusive products.
